Dear Colleagues and Friends,
It is our great honor and pleasure to invite you to the Hybrid 9th International Symposium of the European Working Groups of Myelodysplastic Syndromes (EWOG-MDS) and Severe Aplastic Anemia (SAA) in Childhood which will be held in Athens, Greece, from the September 30- October2, 2021.
In the current situation, it is unlikely that all international participants will be able to travel to Athens. With the hybrid format, we will be able to reach researchers and clinicians otherwise not able to attend this symposium due to financial or organizational restrictions. This will increase education and improve patient care worldwide.
Our insight into the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms of MDS, juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML), and the inherited and acquired bone marrow failure disorders has exploded during the last few years. New disease entities have been discovered, and predisposition to myeloid malignancy is on everyone’s lips. Perhaps more importantly, many of these ground breaking discoveries can lead to new approaches that interact with key pathways in diseased cells, and thus, potentially result in better therapy.
Genetic syndromes have long been associated with a predisposition to the development of leukemia, while germ line mutations have been discovered to define new leukemia predisposition syndromes. EWOG-MDS and EWOG-SAA (the “EWOGs”) are dedicated to the unique examples of this spectrum with acquired and inherited bone marrow failure on one end, and JMML with other rare myeloproliferative disorders on the other.
This Symposium aims to facilitate exchange of novel insight and innovative ideas among basic and translational researcher as well as clinical scientists in the field. It will include key lectures delivered by recognized international leaders but primarily draw from oral presentations and posters selected from the abstracts submitted by participants. The program is designed to create a global market place for science and clinical care in SAA, MDS, JMML, and related disorders in children, adolescents and young adults.
Meeting the challenge “no child left behind”, the EWOGs aim to enhance the knowledge and clinical care of children with hematological disorders worldwide. With the support of our sponsors we can provide some travel grants and designed an exciting interactive program which will suit junior researchers, clinical care givers and high-level experts in the field.
No better meeting place to think of than Athens! The birthplace of classical culture and science welcomes colleagues from all parts of the world for this inspiring International Symposium!
On behalf of the EWOG-MDS & EWOG-SAA,
